Almost everyone has moved at least once in their lifetime.  A fortunate few have lived in the same home their entire lives. So what if it finally happens?  What if you suddenly find yourself having to move?  For all intensive purposes let's just say this is a planned move to a new home. You've just spent a ton of money on closing costs and other expenses to ready your home for your arrival.  The day of your move will be upon you quicker than you can imagine and at times you will feel overwhelmed.  That is why in order for your move to be a success you have to plan.

By planning, I mean...you should have a moving budget (there's that word again!).  People who do not plan their move carefully will be shocked at the amount of money they end up paying, leading to debt and more frustration.  The first step in your planning process should be finding out where your money will be going.  Figure out exactly what you'll be needing to complete your move and how much it will cost.  This will determine how and when you actually move.  Find out how much money you will need after you move.  Yes, I said AFTER you move.  You will be shocked at how much money it takes to get a new home up and running, so build them into your budget before you move.

The next thing to consider is what will be the most cost effective? Hire a moving company, or do it yourself? This is where you can sav

e the most money.  The cost of hiring a moving company can be anywhere from $800 to $4,000 depending on when and to where you will be moving.  Also, it depends on how much stuff you have!  Moving yourself, although it will take a little more time and energy, may be the best option for your particular move.  Weigh the pros and cons of each action before you decide.

If you decide to move yourself (which would be the more cost effective of the two), you'll be needing a truck.  Don't panic, renting a truck is not as complicated as it seems.  Find out all you need to know about renting a truck so you don't over-spend on this high-ticket item.  You'll also need packing supplies.  Find out what you'll need before you purchase packing supplies so you won't overspend.  Check to see where you may be able to get some packing supplies for free.

One last thing...not everyone knows that the government allows for some moving expenses as a deduction as long as you qualify.  There are strict and simple rules to find out if you do and if you're not sure, talk to your accountant or a tax specialist.  Check the items that you can deduct and make sure you save your receipts.  Find out how to record them, including travel expenses.  Even if you're not sure if you qualify for tax deductions, keep all records related to your move...including gas, mileage and any fees associated with transferring your car.

Knowing what to do before moving can determine whether or not you have a relatively pleasant cost effective move, or a poorly planned headache-filled move.  Saving money on your move will get you well on the road to having that cosmetic surgery you've been longing to have.
